I am shocked and deeply saddened to hear of John’s passing. If ever there was a man truly dedicated to his craft and profession, it was John. When it came to firearms identification, known more popularly as “ballistics” to many police TV show watchers, John was simply the best there ever was. I had just been promoted to corporal in my young career at Philly PD, and I was sent the Firearms Ident. lab and assigned to John’s squad by our then boss, Lt. Mark Stephan. John was an amazing firearms examiner (in an excellent squad of fellow examiners) and a great all around man. A devoted family man, dedicated husband, and dedicated father. I am truly blessed to have crossed paths with John, and am proud to say I once worked with the best firearms examiner in the country. Will miss you John. My deepest sympathies to John’s beloved family. God Bless.

Rest in Peace John. John and I worked together at the annual ShotShow in Las Vegas every year as Safety Advisors. We both were Firearms Examiners in our respective laboratories and John was as knowledgeable a person as there was when it came to our expertise. We both belonged to AFTE and he served our association well. Our law enforcement community and forensic science community have lost a wonderful asset. A true gentleman and good friend. God Bless you John Finor. My Prayers are with you and your family my friend.

I had the extreme privilege of knowing John as a teammate, competitor, coach, coworker, trainer, collaborator, and friend. I first met John when we were both members of the Philadelphia Police Combat Pistol Team during the late 70s through early 80s. I quickly learned John was an excellent marksman and fierce competitor, as well as an effective coach. He was a credit to the team and won many individual and team awards, both regional and national. I worked closely with John in the PPD Firearms Identification Unit (aka Ballistics Laboratory) when I was commander the unit from 1990 through 1998. I never commanded John, though. He didn’t need a supervisor, let alone a commander. John personally trained me to be a firearm examiner during my first three years with the unit. It would be true to say he taught me everything I knew about ballistics, but not everything he knew. Our professional relationship was more of a partnership. Working together, we literally rebuilt that laboratory; processes, training, and infrastructure. For a few years John and I collaborated as reviewers for the prestigious American Journal of Forensic Science scrutinizing firearm related papers prior to their acceptance for publication. After I retired John went on to become the president of AFTE, the International Association of Firearm and Toolmark Examiners. He truly possessed an amazing amount of firearm knowledge, skill, and ability. John was, hands down, the best firearm examiner I ever met. He was thorough and exacting in everything he did. His reputation was that one could absolutely count on any report he put his signature to. He was a credit to his department, his profession, and his family.

Terry,
I was sorry to hear of John's passing. My thoughts drifted back to our years at Father Judge and the fun times we had. I remember stopping by to see John at the Pantry Pride where he worked when I was assigned to the 14th District and John was waiting to start with the Police Department. Although the years have slipped by us, I often thought of him. John was an excellent firearms technician and did his job well. He will surely be missed.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to Terry and the rest of John's Family. John was a colleague, a mentor but most importantly he was my friend. John often said that it was necessary to do the right thing for the right reasons. I know of no other individual who truly lived what they spoke like John did. John was a cop's cop and is a legend in the Forensic community, not only due to his incredible talents but also due to his unwavering integrity. He will be sorely missed. Vaya Con Dios my friend.
