Obituary of Leo Joseph Pergiel

Leo "Lee" Joseph Pergiel, of Plymouth Meeting died on February 4, 2014 at the home of his daughter. He was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1926 of the late Walter and Hattie Pergiel. He was proceeded in death by his wife, Bernadine M (McIlvaine); brothers, Walter, Ed, Roman (Ray); sister, Helen; sisters-in-law, Ellen Begley and Jean Orsini; and son-in-law, Ted Shuman. Mr Pergiel was a baker starting his career working for his father at the family bakery (Standard Bakery). He spent six years in the Navy and saw action in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and was awarded the Purple Heart. While attending baking school in Philadelphia he met and married Bernie to whom he was married for 55 years. They then spent years traveling around the country in different work assignments. Lee worked for Acme Markets for 23 years, was self-employed as owner of a produce business Blue Valley Farms and finally retired from McDonald's Corporation where he worked as a global manager of quality assurance for the bakery division traveling around the world. He is survived by daughter, Lee Ann Shuman with whom he lived in Plymouth Meeting; sons, Christopher (Melanie) of Anchorage AK and Paul of Davidson N.C.; sisters ,Lucy Borik (Joseph) and Patrica (Jerry) Berles; sister-in-law, Catherine Hagemeyer; cousin, Dorothy Columbus; grandchildren, Stephanie (Eric) Hegarty and Jennifer (Matt) Cummins, Luke and Jackson Pergiel; great-grandchildren, Kevin and Morgan Hegarty and Maisie Cummins; and many favorite nieces and nephews. Lee's memorial mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St Helena Church, 1489 DeKalb Pike, Blue Bell on Tuesday February 11, 2014 at 11:00 AM. The family will receive visitors prior to the mass at St Helena Church from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. Mr. Pergiel will be privately interned at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville, PA.
