At Kendal, where he spent his last years, Philip was an excellent friend to my mother, Ann Benzel. They shared many meals and good laughs. Because of the hardships and restrictions of the pandemic I have only now learned of his death. I understand that the caring staff made sure they were able to say their goodbyes. My sympathies to Philip's family and friends, with much gratitude for the kindness and friendship he offered my mother.

Phil was my first teacher at Bryn Mawr School of Social Sciences. I remember his impressive Intellect, his feistiness, his curiosity about many subjects and his sense of self. He was a wonderful role model. His presence will be missed. Muriel Wiener class of 1975

I will always remember my work with Philip on GTIP weekends. In particular, he was a caring, challenging and insightful therapist -- and years later I still feel his presence from those moments. As if that wasn’t enough, he also created and presented some wonderful knowledge that lives-on within and beyond psychotherapy. In fact, I still use his Four Corners in my work with coaching clients. I am saddened to learn of his death and blessed by having crossed paths with him. His memory is and will remain a blessing to me.

I was blessed to spend many weekends with Philip. He was truly one of the wisest, kindest people I have ever met. He taught me so many valuable lessons that I will never forget. Goodbye Philip and God bless you.

Philip guided me through a profound piece of work in 1990.
There he sat in front of me. His feet snuggly tucked into warm socks and then into Birkenstocks.
In that moment my thought, feeling, and bodily sensation all unified—resonating with a response he offered. He paused to see my reaction and gave me space to make full contact with myself.
I looked at his face, into his eyes and I felt his presence and attention. I would not have been able to admit to myself what I had become aware of had he not been fully attuned to me because there was shame in what I felt. Philip’s loving acceptance was the antidote.
You have taught me more than you will ever know, Philip. I am practicing The Four Corners and still have quite a way to go. I am grateful to have been one of your students.
Thank you, Philip, for the gifts you have given to us. We are all better off as a result of your humanity.
In Peace.
