I just heard the news and am so sorry for your loss. I was in Mr D's freshman English class his final year teaching at the Mount. When I received my first Christmas card from him, I was so touched and made sure to send him one each year. I always looked forward to receiving his card. I was lucky enough to see him at my Mount reunion about 3 years ago - what a treat and a gift to be able to speak to him one more time. You will be missed, Mr.D. God Bless.

A bit late as I just read the sad news. My deepest sympathies. I actually have been quoting Mr. D over the years about the importance of reading that he spoke about in Junior year English class on first day. I loved having my locker right next to his homeroom and chatting with him in the mornings. And I always think of him & English class fondly anytime I see or hear anything about Beowulf. He also made it so fun to work on yearbook when he was the moderator and got me interested in graphic layout & design. He was an inspiring, great teacher, a fun moderator & locker neighbor but above all, an incredible human being.

The Michigan Donohoes are shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of our much loved cousin, uncle and great Uncle. And although life arranged things so that we have seen each other too little over the last several years (our Joe III most recently saw him at the funeral service for Jay ), everyone remembers "Uncle Franny" and shares in the grief of his loss. We wish him God Speed and to his stricken family, consolation in the wonderful memories of a kind, loving and upstanding husband, father and grandfather.

Dear Donohoe Clan,
No words can express my sorrow at the news of Mr.s D's passing. I have so many fond memories of him and the Sundsy night dinners ar your home during my college years. Thank you for welcoming me into your home and treating me like family.
Though I never sat in his classroom, I feel like he was one of my influential teachers of life. Simply watching him at home with his family, taught you everything about the important things in life... Love of Family, Kindess, and Integrity.

I am devastated by this news. Mr. D is my teacher, my mentor, my confidant, my pen pal, and my extended family! I pray for Mrs. D, his better half (as he would say with a wink and a smile). I am just at a loss for words and I know that Mr. D would be disappointed because his talent for words, both reading and writing them, was a gift from our Lord. He will now be that guardian angel looking down on all of us, whispering I knew you could do it!

I am truly heartbroken to hear of the passing of Mr. D. He was such an inspiration to me while I was a student at Frankford High School. He encouraged me to step outside of my comfort zone by running for President of Thanatopsis, a service organization at Fkd where he was the advisor. He made his English class so much fun that I looked forward to that part of the school day the most. In later years I would see him in Ocean City at their annual block party- most times he was collecting for the Sunshine Club- a cause that benefit underprivileged children (no surprise since he was all about helping kids!). He kept in touch each Christmas with a handwritten note in a card- something I looked forward to every year. I will miss his smile, kindness and nice hugs. RIP my friend- the world seems a little dimmer somehow without your bright light.

Mr Donohoe was my late wife Joyce Franks's ( FHS' 66) teacher at both Harding Jr. HS and FHS. She was in the worst English class at Harding. He only talked to 5 kids in the class, it was that bad. When he left Harding in tears my wife went him in 1963. He was her mentor and loved him deeply. We saw him at the FHS ' 66 reunion and the 3 of us talked with him in depth. I knew him from around the school even though he was never my teacher. FHS nation will deeply miss him..... in love Thomas Sweeney FHS' 70.

Mr. D. was my English teacher at Frankford during the mid 60s - and I learned so much more than English skills. The kindly and humorous way he guided teenagers provided me with enough memories to call upon when I needed inspiration for my own classroom teaching days. How he directly and respectfully spoke with teenagers influenced my approach as a high school guidance counselor. Your "Troops" thank you, Mr. D. My sincere condolences go out to your family.

When ever I walked into has class he would say good morning little tiger. Many times during the years I have thought of this maybe that why we encouraged our children to become teachers in which they did. Mr D. was a perfect example of what a teacher should be. I am broken hearted to hear of Frank Donohoe's passing. He taught me at Frankford High and was a mentor and ally during "teen" turmoil and trouble to so many of us there, including me. Our friendship extended over the decades. He was a great and compassionate teacher too. My husband and I visited him over the years in Glenside and at Ocean City. His unfailing enthusiasm for life, with his lovely caring wife at his side at all times, was contagious. His love for his children and grandchildren was huge. We never left a visit with him without feeling uplifted. I loved receiving the yearly newsletter from him and his wife about all the Donohoe clan! The world will be a sadder place without him. Our deepest condolences to his wife and family. Rest in peace, dear friend.

He was a wonderful teacher who truly cared about his students, and I know that I was blessed to have him as an educator at Frankford High, and then as a life long friend. I can only hope that during my years teaching in elementary and middle schools that I was able to be as positive an influence on students as he was on those whom he taught. When I was a senior at LaSalle College I was assigned to student teach at my Alma Mater, Frankford High. My coop teacher was a LaSalle grad, Mr. Donohoe. To say I hit the jackpot is an understatement. I still remember teaching his senior English class and also having an unusual tenth grade opportunity. He team taught with the department head all of the tenth grade honors students, and each Wednesday I taught the combined group of 65. Little did I know that I would actually get appointed to Frankford and that two years later several kids in that class would be the editors of the first yearbook I would sponsor. My success as a student teacher, which launched me into my career, was because of Frank.
Frank was first my mentor, then my colleague, and then my lifelong friend. He was a great teacher, a devoted family man, and a Godly witness.
I remember the first time my wife and I went to visit the Donohoe family on Abington Ave. When we went into their
home, all seven of them were at a big table playing a game as a family! I knew we had entered a special place. Mary Lou and the five children all held a special place in my heart from that first evening on. My best memory with them was when we went to visit on Halloween, and our costumes were so good they couldn’t figure out who we were. Afraid they were not going to let us in, we finally identified ourselves. Going to their home was always fun.
Frank was truly beloved at Frankford. I honestly don’t ever remember hearing anyone say an unkind word about him. He was truly special.
When I finally retired from my public school career, I moved in to Eastern University. As part of my role in the College of Education, I made it a point to teach the first course to our prospective teachers. On day one I always said , “ Teaching is not a J-O-B, it’s a J-O-Y. If you don’t feel called to do it, do something else”. Well, for Frank teaching was always a J-O-Y. And he truly was called to do it.
I love you, Frank. Thanks for being such a big part of my life!

For almost two years of turmoil in my life, Mr. D wrote me letters, almost daily. When no one else believed I’d get through the darkness, he never gave up on me. Mr. D saved my life 10,000 times over and his death will leave a hole in my heart and the hearts of many of his students. It was my privilege to be on the receiving end of his intelligence, his loyalty, his love of education and his faith. Mr. D. was my favorite English teacher in high school and he was also my friend. We got to know one another well when I was in his homeroom and he mentored me as editor of the yearbook. He encouraged me to write and is a big reason I still write today. I always hold onto a version of a Robert Burns quote he had hanging in the yearbook office at The Mount: “The best laid plans of mice and men must often be made and then made again”- words I’ve always lived by that always made me understand that things often do not go as planned, and even if we fail, we must try again. We exchanged Christmas cards and letters for over 25 years since I graduated. I will always hold him and his family in my heart.
