Aunt Sis was the woman who spurred my need for obsessive research of family history. A naturally quiet woman, she still spent hours around our kitchen table answering my questions about her and my Dad growing up, sharing fascinating stories about my ancestors and was even willing to carry those stories over into our next visit. She never tired of my incessant questions; well, at least she never made me feel that she did. She spent quite a bit of time correcting some stories I’d heard from other sources that may have been missing pieces or had some embellished “facts” with wry amusement.
Some of my fondest memories are of coming home for lunch from work and finding our table surrounded by the founders of the Groffy Coffee crew. There was never one single conversation going on, it was a confusing jumble of a loud tennis match of voices. They were experts in the art of having five conversations at once. And then there, at the end of that table sat Aunt Sis, Aunt Betty and my mom huddled together with the eye rolling, mumbled talk as they listened to her brothers debate the color of the car to have last driven up Troutman Road. I loved every minute of the time we had together, Aunt Sis and will miss you always. Janet

When I think of Sis the first thing that popped into my head was the many pinochle games played at the Smith's kitchen table. No matter how poorly I played Sis never got mad. I can't say the same for brother-in-law Whitey. Who can forget the innumerable softball games on the hill beside Sis' house. Running to first was ok, but trying to reach second was truly an uphill climb. Going from third to home was downhill and if you weren't careful you would not stop until you went over the embankment onto Troutman Rd.
Sis and Whitey always made sure the family pool was cleaned and properly maintained. Whenever we had a snow storm Donald and I would put on our boots and trudge up the hill to Sis'. Sis never had much to say, she never looked for attention, but if you said or did something she disapproved of you got that look. There was no mistaking that look. Sis spent most of her time being a wife, a mother, and a Grandmom. She was also my sister. I think we became even closer when Chris and I moved to Florida and then to North Carolina. We had longer talks on the phone and during our visits to Pennsylvania than when we lived close to each other. She helped me immensely when I was beginning my family tree research. She gave me many documents and photos to post. Sis, you will be missed. I am so glad Chris and I were able to visit with you in late July. You were unable to talk to us very much but we could see recognition in you eyes and your patented half smile. We were pleased to be able, with Chip's help to enjoy a few minutes in the garden outside your room. We are sorry Chris and I cannot attend your homegoing services, but I am unable to travel again for sometime. Just know that we will be there in spirit and our prayers will continue for your family. You will always be in our hearts. George and Chris
