Andrew B. lit a candle

In 2019, I had the pleasure of taking two courses, Marketing Strategy and Advertising, taught by Dr. Pitman during my time as an undergraduate student at Binghamton University. These courses were some of the first ones I took that catered to my professional interests since I had declared a concentration in marketing. And so, I eagerly took both of these courses in the same semester with only a 10 minute recess in between them.
On the first day of classes, Dr. Pitman was surprised to see me remain seated after Advertising had ended. He was even more surprised when I was still seated as Marketing Strategy began. He teased me after class had ended that I would be in over my head taking two of his courses in one semester. We both laughed, but only one of us knew how right he was.
He was, of course, right, which I would find to be an all too common occurrence over the course of the semester. I had never read more case studies or drafted more write-ups just to be proven wrong the following few classes. It was incredibly humbling and even more rewarding. More importantly, I learned the importance of considering outside perspectives through collaboration. In many ways, his classes and the case studies we analyzed in them were simulations of the corporate world and the experiences we would all have working with others in it.
Beyond the coursework, I got to know Dr. Pitman personally over the course of the semester as well. Oftentimes, we would talk in between classes and after class about the cases I was struggling to find the perfect solutions for (spoiler: there were none because that’s how the real world works), which would segue into other topics about our lives. Although I would never recommend to my younger self taking two of Dr. Pitman’s notoriously difficult courses in the same semester, I also don’t think I would have gotten to know him as well as I did if I hadn’t. For that reason, I’m very glad that I did.
I wanted to write something to let you know that Dr. Pitman had a lot of students who could tell he loved what he did, myself included. We had a lot of respect for him, were able to learn a lot from him, and still think and talk about him fondly. I hope this message finds you in the process of healing and reflecting on happy times.
Best,
Andrew

We were so grateful to have Glenn as a kind and thoughtful neighbor for so many years here in State College, Pa. He was such a pleasure to be around, and always had a smile on his face. We enjoyed his tailgate parties and his quick wit. We send our sincere and heartfelt condolences to Bobbie and his family. We wish you all peace and healing in the days to come. Love, Fred Wood and Deborah Marsh.
